Just for Kicks!

A few months ago we were approached by the youth director at First Presbyterian Church about partnering for an event. She explained that her youth group had been working on “Building their best youth group” and had all been offering valuable input on what they wanted their group to learn, do and become. They decided they wanted to learn more about service and in particular, partner with an organization serving those with special needs. This was music to our ears as we love to know our local youth are curious and passionate about inclusion!

We decided that a kickball tournament would be a great way for our groups to get to know one another and would also be a lot of fun for all involved! They named the tournament, Just for Kicks, and went to work planning a very special event for our adults to participate in.

The day of the tournament arrived and we were blown away by the number of youth there to participate! They were also joined by some of our local highschool Project Unify friends which made for an even bigger and better crowd!

The adults were so excited to play and we were shocked by just how comfortably and easily both groups jumped in and began getting to know one another.

Play began almost immediately as ‘practice’ but everyone was enjoying themselves so much we decided not to stop to pick teams and start over...instead just rolling with the game that had developed on its own!

As I walked around the field taking photos I was overjoyed to see so many budding relationships. There were groups of Rays and youth sitting on the sidelines chatting and cheering, some helping each other to get a snack, others laughed as they stood in line to kick alongside one another. Some of our Rays have mobility issues and it was amazing to see youth group members jump up and grab their hands to help them run to a base or steady them as they walked off the field. Everyone was high fiving, laughing and smiling throughout the entire tournament.

We concluded play with some singing and parachute games (always a hit!) and the youth had a final surprise for the Rays. Sunshine medals that they had made for them! It was so special to see them beam with pride as their new friends looped medals around their necks. The perfect end to an absolutely perfect day.

Thank you FPC Youth Group “Legendary Islanders” for making our day. We can’t wait to do more with you in the future! What special young people you all are, truly legendary indeed!
